翰唐美国俚语学习笔记（一）

                                      

“水果和蔬菜”的俚语（过于简单的没有录入，如apple of one’s eye; top banana; as cool as a cucumber等。同时提醒英语学习者：英语学习最忌讳学偏，例如过分热衷于成语、俚语等，但适当了解一些是必要的。我始终坚信，英语不能以牺牲优雅的代价换来今天虚假的普及，真正美丽的英语是存在于维多利亚时代的。）

Apple

n       Compare apples and oranges – to compare two things that simply cannot be compared 比较两个无法相比的事物
例：That’s ridiculous. Now you’re comparing apples and oranges.

n       “How do you like them apples?”—“What do you think of that?”
注：这是对某种冒犯行为作出报复后所说的话。

Banana

n       Play second banana – to be second choice 第二选择；次要人物
例：I always play second banana to her. 我总是做她的候补。

Bean

n       beans about something (not to know)—not to know anything about something
例：I don’t know beans about computers. 我对电脑一窍不通。
（注：这一短语只有否定形式）

n       Bean Town—波士顿市（该市以特产烘豆而闻名）

Carrot

n       carrot in front of someone – to temp someone with an unobtainable offer 开空头支票【以实践不了的诺言诱惑某人】
例：The boss told me if I perform well on the job, we’ll talk about a salary increase next year. But I think he’s just dangling a carrot in front of me.

Cauliflower

n       cauliflower ears –swollen ears usually resulting from a boxing match 开花耳朵
例：That boxer has cauliflower ears. 那个拳击运动员的耳朵被打开花了。

Cherry

n       bowl of cherries – to be wonderful
例：Life isn’t always a bowl of cherries. 生活并不总是美好的。

Corn

n       “For corn sake!”—“Oh, my goodness!”
注：这个短语虽然已相当过时，但中老年人仍在使用。
翰唐评：大概是老年人比年轻人更懂得粮食的价值吧。我住的楼下有一个老太太不仅懂得粮食的重要，而且对任何扔掉的东西都舍不得。我每次从楼下经过，几乎都看见她趴在垃圾桶上搜寻着一切或许还能用的东西。如今这个一次性社会（disposable society）显然让许多老年人感到了不适应。又，动不动就喊“Oh, my God!”是一个非常不好的口头习惯，不仅对于那些语言学习尚不到位的学习者如此，对于英国、美国的年轻人也是一个不恰当的口头禅。按照基督教的《圣经》要求，“人不得妄称上帝的名。”动不动就喊出这一嗓子来，如果是愣头青的英语学习者，只能让人感到尴尬和一些恶心；而对于以英语为母语的年轻人来说，他们这样的口头禅也让同样以英语为母语的老年人大皱眉头。这一点值得注意。

n       Corn –overemotional drama 感情表现夸张的戏剧
例：That movie was so corny!这部电影表现得太夸张了！

n       Cornball—ridiculous
例：Where did you buy that cornball hat? 你从哪儿买的那顶滑稽的帽子啊？

Fruit

n       fruit-- homosexual
例：I think that guy’s a fruit. 我觉得那个人是个同性恋。
注：fruit指具有女人气的同性恋男子，同时这个词带有很强的贬义。同性恋群体比较能接受的还是gay这个词 （呃，好恶心。）

n       grapevine – coming from an unofficial source, oftentimes a rumor
例：I heard it through the grapevine. 我是听小道消息说的。
翰唐评：汉语中也有“在葡萄架下偷听牛郎织女说情话的传说”，有意思。这一巧合至少说明了两个问题：1. 偷听别人说话（还有eavesdrop）是东西方人的通病。2.葡萄自古都和男女之情以及色情联系在一起

Lemon

n       lemon –worthless merchandise, junk
例：That car is a real lemon. 那辆车真烂。
翰唐评：我工作时鬼子们在表示“什么什么真烂”的时候说得更狠―― “… is a piece of shit.” 比说“什么什么sucks, crap”之类的恶毒多了，呵呵。

Peach

n       a real peach – terrific, really nice (said of a person but primarily used sarcastically) 通常用于挖苦
例：She’s a real peach! 她可真是个“大好人”啊！
翰唐评：不知道这个词和impeach是不是有什么关系？

Pickle

n       pickle –predicament 困境，尴尬的处境
例：I really got myself into a pickle this time. 这次我真的陷入了困境（这次我真的糗了。）

Potato

n       couch potato –to laze habitually on the couch 习惯懒散的人
例：He’s such a couch potato. 他是个懒虫，整天赖在沙发上不做事。

n       small potatoes – unimportant
例：That’s small potatoes compared to the real problem. 和真正的困难相比，那只是小事。

Pumpkin – (term of endearment) sweetheart, honey （爱称，“亲爱的”、“宝贝儿”）

注：作为爱称，pumpkin常读作pung-kin.

翰唐评：各国人民对于爱称、昵称有种种发嗲的创造。什么“我的小麻雀”啦，“我的小甜点”啦，“我的小蚂蚁”啦……反正怎么让第三者听着恶心你就怎么说，谁也管不着。

Sprout—short, young person

例：He may be a sprout right now, but give him a few more years. 他虽然现在个子不高，但再过几年就会长高的。

翰唐评：但是像汤姆·克鲁斯和木村拓哉支流，只怕这辈子也长不高了。不过话又说回来，引用牛群大哥的一句名言：“马大骡子大了值钱，人大了不值钱。”又，据我观察，现实中能赚钱的大多是小个子（姚明除外）。另外，汉语中说谁谁“豆芽菜”跟这个词也是异曲同工啊，有意思。
