For many people in Spanish-speaking countries, the Catholic religion is a way of life which begins from birth. Spanish first names are usually given in honor of Catholic saints. Many girls' names refer to the Virgin Mary. The name Dolores, for instance, is an abbreviation of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores -- Our Lady of the Sorrows. Other names which honor the Virgin Mary are: Carmen, Concepción, Consuelo, Pilar, Mercedes.
