El cumpleaños y el día del santo (Birthdays and saint's days)
Since the family means a great deal to most Spanish-speaking people, birthdays are occasions for large celebrations and family gatherings. First there is a meal to which family (parents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents), godparents (los padrinos) and friends are invited. Then the party continues with stories, music and dancing, and a lot of fun.
In addition to their birthdays, many Hispanic people also celebrate their saint's day. This is the day on which the Catholic Church honors a particular saint. For example, a person named Juan would celebrate his día del santo on June 24, el día de San Juan.
Some Hispanic people are named after the saint who was being honored on the day of their birth, and as a result their saint's day coincides with their birthday.
