Despite its relatively small population, Miami is a diverse place. Many of its districts are officially cities on their own, and each has a distinctive background and character. Some are compact enough to explore on foot (like South Beach), but you’ll need a car or local buses to travel between them. The obvious starting point is downtown Miami, though tourists spend only a small amount of time in this unremarkable area. Its streets are lined by garishly decorated shops and filled with a startling cross-section of people, bringing a lively yet business feel to an area overlooked by towering office buildings.

 

Beyond the environs of downtown, the city spreads out in a broad arc to the west and south. The first of Miami’s Cubans – who have reshaped the city substantially – settled a few miles west in (what became) Little Havana, which is still one of the most enjoyable neighborhoods to stroll through. Little Havana’s street grid give way to the spacious boulevards of Coral Gables, whose finely wrought Mediterranean architecture is as impressive now as it was n the Twenties. South of downtown, Coconut Grove is mounting a strong bid to become Miami’s trendiest quarter, beautifully placed alongside Biscayne Bay and loaded with world-class restaurants and eclecticshopping.

 

However, most tourists come to Miami for South Beach – a fairly small area at the southern tip of Miami Beach. Here, rows of tastefully, and strictly restyled Thirties Art Deco（装饰派艺术）buildings have become chic gathering places for the city’s fashionable and famous faces. It is no fluke that（……绝非偶然）that many of Florida’s leading art galleries and nightclubs are found in this compact area, and every square block of the Art Deco district is worth seeing, as well as the stunning crushed coral rock beaches and warm, blue waters.
