TAIPEI (AFP) - Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang party Sunday formally nominated Ma Ying-jeou, who has been indicted on corruption charges, as its candidate to run in next year's presidential election.
"The reason I am standing for president is I want Taiwan to stride forward. Taiwan must win," Ma said after the joint ticket was endorsed by a congress in the northern city of Taoyuan.
Ma, a former mayor of the capital Taipei, has vowed to revive the sluggish economy and push for political reform if he beats former premier Frank Hsieh from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
He has also pledged to end hostility with China, which regards Taiwan as a renegade province awaiting reunification.
Siew, 68, is widely credited for leading Taiwan through the Asian financial crisis while he was prime minister.
Ma, 56, quit as KMT chairman in February after being indicted on corruption charges, which he denies.
He is alleged to have misused about 11 million Taiwan dollars (333,300 US) in expense accounts during his tenure as Taipei mayor from 1998 to 2006.
He was elected KMT chairman in July 2005 and oversaw the party's landslide victory in local elections five months later.
Hsieh, who was nominated by the DPP last month, has yet to pick his running mate.
